The narrative in filmmaker Pascale Ferran’s beautifully produced Bird People never quite gains altitude, as she’s more concerned with conveying—and very effectively so—some important notions about where technology and progress are taking us and what they’re taking us away from.
Ferran delivers a flurry of characters, but animal lovers and special-effects fans will especially appreciate the cinematic magic that introduces those storied Parisian sparrows. One bird, especially, hovers about the Charles de Gaulle Airport and becomes more human than might be expected. Said bird also provides viewers with a unique trip into the air and the ever-complex, increasingly challenged human condition.
Not insignificant is the fact that the film’s birds provide counterpoint to the roar and anomie of the cold international air hub that serves as a temporary haven for travelers. Many films have used the airport/airport hotels/air travel setting effectively (The VIPs, etc.) but Ferran takes this world-within-a-world a few steps further.
Throughout, she interjects impressionistic snippets of a variety of people on the move, maybe going somewhere and nowhere at the same time. Reading between the (ticket) lines and busy-bodies are hints that mortals continue to do battle with familiar demons like survival, stress and sanity, but these days maybe even more so.
The glistening airport and the insistent modernity of its hotel serve as ongoing visual metaphors for what is draining quality of life and driving alienation from the physical world. The miraculous mobility and access of the sparrows make an ironic mockery of all that constrains human lives, even as humans today have more mobility and access than ever.
